title: Week 8 Betting Gameplan Review
type: text
description: >-
Week 8 2026: the placed slips returned 35% of their stake, the 30 chosen sets hit 17 times against
20.8 expected and the 47 parlays 5 against 3.9. The favorite slip is a by-6 round robin one Brock
Bowers catch from about 1,390/1. The lesson: five games ended by 17+ and four ran shootouts,
outcomes our branches barely filed, so week 9 files an open 17+ band for each side and publishes a
  weekly branch calibration.

## The games our branches couldn't hold

*[[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/README.md#what-this-is|What this is, in a minute]].*

Before each game we sketch the few ways we think it can go, such as a close game, a two-score win or a shootout. We give each a chance and build bets for each one, and we call these sketches branches. Week 8's games went where our branches had little or no room.

- **Five games ended by 17 or more.** Jacksonville by 35, Buffalo by 26, Pittsburgh by 21, Washington and Chicago by 17. Across the slate our branches gave that margin about 0.14 games, because no game had a band for it.
- **Shootouts ran in four games** (TEN @ CIN, LV @ NYJ, ARI @ DAL and KC @ DEN), against about 1.8 we expected.
- **Ten of the 14 games needed a ruling by hand** to say which branch had run, because the game fit none of them cleanly.
- **Inside the branch that ran, the reads held.** Its margin and total each landed in range in 13 of 14 games.

**The branches we filed low paid the week.**

- **TEN @ CIN's shootout was our 8% branch.** Its read had Burrow throwing to keep pace with a Tennessee offense that could score. He threw 48 times for 462 yards, Tee Higgins caught 10 for 155 and 2 touchdowns, and Tennessee scored 36 ([[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/week-8-ten-at-cin-record.md|record]]).
- **KC @ DEN's shootout was our 7% branch.** Mahomes threw for 321 and the game reached 52 points. A three-leg parlay built on it cashed at +1807 ([below](#favorite-slip)).

**A reader asked first.** KoalatyStats asked us privately on 10-27 whether our branch chances were calibrated, using CAR @ GB's five as the example. Week 8 answered: not at the edges. From week 9 every game files an open 17+ band for each side, and each week now closes by setting each branch kind's summed chance against how often it ran:

| Branch kind | Our summed chance | Games it ran in |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One score | 8.9 | 7 |
| Two scores | 4.7 | 2 |
| 17 or more | 0.1 | 5 |
| Shootout | 1.8 | 4 |
| Grind | 0.0 | 1 |

- The branch we rated likeliest ran in 4 games, against 4.8 its chances expected, so the miss sits in the tails, not at the top.
- Margins come from the final score; a shootout or grind is a shape and can sit beside any margin.

**The week**

- Our placed slips returned 35% of their stake. Three won: two Thursday round robins and a three-leg parlay at +1807.
- We also score every position the plan chose, placed or not, at one unit each ([[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/reference/betting-glossary.md|glossary]]).
  - The 30 [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/reference/betting-glossary.md#wager-structure|sets]] hit 17 times against 20.8 expected, 4.66 units up.
  - The 47 parlays hit 5 times against 3.9 expected, 16.94 units down.
- [The full record](#results).

## From the community

- **KoalatyStats's week 8 roundup ([Substack](https://koalatystats.substack.com/p/week-8-advanced-stats-predictions)) changed one read that came true.** It flagged Jaylen Warren's explosive-run rate against Cleveland's league-worst explosive-run defense. We measured it (Cleveland allows 10+ yards on 0.149 of designed runs, the highest in the league), and Warren's 110+ to 130+ rungs were rated live. He ran for 143, with a 51-yard run, and the 110+ hit at +550.
- **KoalatyStats also asked, by message, whether our branch chances are calibrated.** That question is this week's story, and the weekly calibration above is the answer we now publish.

## What the read got right

- **Tee Higgins, 150+ receiving yards at +1100, and Joe Burrow, 375+ passing yards at +850.** The shootout read had Burrow throwing to keep pace with Tennessee. Burrow threw for 462 and 5 touchdowns, and Higgins caught 10 of 11 targets for 155. The 150 cleared only in overtime.
- **Kenny Gainwell, 40+ rushing yards at +640.** The read had Tampa Bay leading and running. It led wire to wire and ran 56 times against 4 dropbacks, and Gainwell carried 25 times for 140 beside Bucky Irving's 27.
- **Jaylen Warren, 110+ rushing yards at +550.** The read had Pittsburgh carrying a two-score lead on the ground. It ran 33 designed carries, and Warren took 17 for 143 and a touchdown, 81 of them in the first quarter.
- **Chicago -10.5 at +733.** The read's Chicago-controls branch ran: Chicago led wire to wire and won 34-17, and that branch's margin and total both landed.
- **Tennessee over 24.5 at +430.** Inside the shootout Tennessee was read to score 27. It scored 36.
- **Blake Corum, 70+ rushing yards at +310.** The read had Corum closing a Rams lead. They led 24-9 after three, and he carried 11 times for 73 and a touchdown.

## Favorite slip

**[The longshot: FanDuel round robin by 6, 13 legs over 7 games](https://xo.football/m/trashman/wagers/fa0ebdb2f7ac9de2/319671/2) — one line lost only on Brock Bowers, at about 1,390/1.**

- 9 of its 13 legs were priced +290 or longer.
- Tee Higgins 110+ at +350, Buffalo -11.5 at +310, Arizona to win at +290, Tampa Bay -4.5 and Jacksonville -10.5 all hit.
- Bowers's 100+ at +290 missed by 8 yards: he caught 7 for 92 and scored twice.
- [Another line](https://xo.football/m/trashman/wagers/fa0ebdb2f7ac9de2/319671/16), at about 3,900/1, lost only on Drake Maye's 4+ touchdown passes at +1000. We read that leg for New England controlling the game, and instead it won 24-19 from behind. Maye threw 2 touchdowns and ran 1 in, and our Maye 2+ at -148 hit on another slip.
- Higgins hit in a game we read differently. We had Cincinnati in control, and it became a 43-36 overtime shootout in which he caught 10 for 155.

![FanDuel round robin line 2 of 43: Higgins 110+, TB -4.5, Arizona to win, BUF -11.5 and JAX -10.5 hit; Brock Bowers finished 8 yards short of 100](user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/best-slips/bowers-one-leg-short-line.png)

**Also cashed:**

- [A Thursday FanDuel round robin's best line, at +451](https://xo.football/m/trashman/wagers/1e396b7ee0b4387e/317333/6). The whole ticket returned 1.8 times its stake.
  - Jordan Love 275+ passing yards: he threw for 288.
  - James Cook to score a touchdown: he scored.
  - █████ Brown 50+ rushing yards: he ran for 55.
- [A three-leg FanDuel parlay at +1807](https://xo.football/m/trashman/wagers/aa444c7524366b3a?view=wagers).
  - LAC @ LA under 45.5 points: they scored 33.
  - Patrick Mahomes 300+ passing yards: he threw for 321.
  - KC @ DEN over 50.5 points: they scored 52.

## Our favorites, graded

- The execution plan's 19 favorites went 5-14, about 5.7 units down at the prices taken ([[█████████████████-█████████████████-██████-█-██████████████████████|███ ████]]).
- Ten of the 14 misses rode a branch that did not run.

## What we're improving

- We are still building this method, week by week.
- Each fix below started as a surfaced problem: a miss in our own grading or a question from someone reading along.
- If you see one we have not, tell us on [Discord](https://discord.gg/fgNnYM7jPn) or reply to us on X or Bluesky.

Going into week 8, the fixes from [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-7/week-7-review.md#what-were-improving|week 7]] held:

- **A long shot is ruled out only when no game script reaches it.** Of the week's 18 big games (120+ yards or 2+ touchdowns), 17 sat on a curve that reached them. Week 7 had 21 we never named.
- **A game script's total is as wide as the games inside it.** The played branch's total landed in range in 13 of 14 games, against 6 of 13 in week 7.
- **Every long shot gets a read before lock.** 492 of the week's 499 posted outcomes had a read.
- **A bet's reason says why, not just a number.** One member went in with no mechanism, against 15 in week 7.

Changed for week 9:

- **Every game files an open 17+ band for each side.** Week 8 ended five games there with no band to hold them.
- **Each branch break names a margin and a time,** such as "Minnesota leads by a score at the half", so a ruling on which branch ran is a reading, not a judgment.
- **Each week closes on the branch calibration** shown above, with each kind's summed chance set against how often it ran.
- **A contested starting quarterback gets an in-game hook arm.** Brissett was benched with Arizona down 17-3 after a week of public debate, and the read had only a pregame arm ([trace](#selection-traces)).
- **Weather is read from forecasters' posts as well as the forecast table.** ATL @ TB's heavy rain was posted almost five hours before kickoff while the table read 0.00 inches.
- **A back's yards per carry is read against the opponent's run defense** whenever the profile names one, never his season rate over it. James Cook carried a 4.8 season rate into a front the same profile said caps him, and averaged 3.8.
- **Pressure is priced by the coverage behind it.** Denver pressured Mahomes on 19 of 44 dropbacks and he still threw for 287 against its zone.
- **A staff's plan is read from the games this staff has run.** A turn in its last game or two, where the score does not explain it, is a question; that part of a read is never history from before the change.
- **A returning teammate is read from both sides of the change.** The returner's own role claim sits beside each holder's, so a room that moved while he was out is not read as the room he left.
- **A drafting gate routes a covered branch to another shape; it never removes it.** The 50/1 mark is a soft target on a longshot same-game parlay, not a ceiling — a slip grows toward it only when a leg rises inside the branch it covers.
- **A game's longshot same-game parlays are counted by the stories they tell** — one per distinct branch story no other shape carries, never one per game.
- **Price picks the book, the rung, the shape and the limit — and nothing else.** Whether a bet stands, and what it is, is the read's call.
- **Grading is one rule.** A rate is graded against the spread its own sample could produce, and a game member whose covered branch ran is graded on whether that mechanism happened.
- **A player past his own curve is read that way at every grain** — a number past it is a missed signal, not variance.
- **A slip is checked against the plan before the first kickoff.** Week 8 saw 52 wagers placed after their first leg had already kicked; a slip that has started no longer counts as part of the plan.
- **A player read out for a missed week is not carried as out into the next.**

Coming:

- **A branch's member is the player and stat that branch drives most,** chosen by the lift the branch gives it — landing in the week-9 price lanes.
- **Week 10: a branch's margin and its shape become two separate tags,** so a shootout can sit in any margin band.
- **Calibration is moving into one module:** a single fit measured against how often each kind actually ran, replacing the separate width fit and this week's per-kind row (planned).
- **The week's outcome lists are moving into one ledger:** every settled market outcome set against the belief that graded it, with each coverage gap named (planned).

The week's [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-research-review.md|research review]] lists every takeaway the walk carried into week 9's reads.

## Results

| | Count | Record | Return |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Placed tickets | 242 | 3 won, 239 lost | 35% of stake |
| Sets | 30 | 17 hit, against 20.8 expected | +4.66 units |
| Parlays | 47 | 5 hit, against 3.9 expected | -16.94 units |

- Units are one unit per position at the price it was chosen, placed or not.
- The plan's slips reached the books as drafted: 2,428 of their 2,432 legs matched a chosen line. Of the other four, three sat in one CAR @ GB parlay placed off the plan and one moved a rung.
- 57 of the 288 chosen members were never placed, 10 of them CHI @ SEA's, where the Monday plan was never drafted.
- Every chosen position, set against what was placed, is in [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/verdict-store-reconciliation.md|the reconciliation]].
- Every game's positions, each with its read and result, are in [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/week-8-records.md|the game records]].

## What the read got wrong

- A read is graded on whether the decision, script or role it named actually happened, apart from whether its bet won ([[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/method/betting-outcome-grading.md|how outcomes are graded]]).
- Each row counts a player and market once, so a ladder of lines is one read. A ladder won if any line hit, and takes the grade most of its lines carried.

| Read grade {.col-m} | Won | Lost | What it means {.col-l} |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Right | 26 | 4 | The named mechanism happened |
| Partly right | 7 | 12 | Part of it happened, and the part that did not is named |
| Wrong | 0 | 9 | It did not happen |
| Script not played | 26 | 110 | The bet was read for a branch the game never played, so its result says nothing about its mechanism |
| No thesis | 1 | 0 | The read was a rate times a volume, with no mechanism specific to this game |
| Thrown out | 1 | 7 | The player left the game, so neither the read nor the result counts |

- Every grade was checked by hand against the game's played script.
- **Two of every three reads rode a branch that did not run.** That is the story above in the grades: the reads were filed per branch, and the branches were too narrow.

**[[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/method/betting-outcome-grading.md#layer-one-the-read|In-game exits]]**

- Eight reads are thrown out above, on three players who left: Lamar Jackson on Baltimore's first snap, Christian Watson, who came back limited, and Hunter Henry.
- Another 36 member rows rode a game where a key teammate left: BAL @ BUF 6 (Jackson), CAR @ GB 12 (Watson), ARI @ DAL 7 (Jeremiyah Love, though Brissett's two were ruled a benching) and NE @ MIA 11 (Henry).
- Leaving out every row an exit touched, the chosen members went 76-167 rather than 85-203.

**Why the misses missed.** Each of the 203 lost members carries one measured cause:

| Cause | Losses |
| --- | --- |
| Landed inside our own filed range | 80 |
| Not measurable from the game record | 51 |
| Efficiency: the volume came, the yards or scores per chance did not | 22 |
| Team volume: the plays or attempts were not there | 19 |
| An in-game exit | 17 |
| Usage: the role or share was not what we read | 14 |

- **Most losses were not [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/method/betting-outcome-grading.md#layer-three-the-process-account|process failures]].** 94 were sound bets lost to variance and 51 turned on something no pregame read could see.
- **51 were misruled.** The result landed inside the read's own range, so the line we chose lost the bet, not the read. They go to the pricing and ruling step, among them James Cook's 100+ and Justin Herbert's 275+.
- **Seven were missed signals,** where our own data showed the miss coming: Jacoby Brissett's yards and touchdowns, Drake London's 150+, Kirk Cousins's 300+, Atlanta's team total and the LAC @ LA over in two positions. The traces below cover all of them but Atlanta's team total, which the London trace's rain finding explains.
- **The read gave one player a role the game split.** Josh Downs and Tyler Warren, Omar Cooper and Adonai Mitchell, KC Concepcion and Harold Fannin Jr., Ashton Jeanty and Mike Washington Jr.: each time the volume went to the other man.
- **Staff plans were read from before they turned.** Cincinnati's pass-first turn, the run-first turns in Dallas and Tampa Bay, and Kubiak's calls when trailing had each changed in recent weeks, and the reads leaned on rates from before.
- **A signal the read saw was held only on a low rung.** Gainwell's run-first role was read and held at 40+ rushing yards, and he ran for 140. Emmett Johnson's role was read and held at 30+ receiving yards, and he caught for 128.

## Selection traces

Four reads were traced to the step that formed them ([[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/drake-london-receiving-yards-over.md|London]], [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/jacoby-brissett-passing-yards-over.md|Brissett]], [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/lac-at-la-total-points-over.md|LAC @ LA over]], [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/kirk-cousins-passing-yards-over.md|Cousins]]).

| Selection {.col-m} | Read | Verdict | Finding {.col-l} |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/drake-london-receiving-yards-over.md|Drake London 150+ receiving yards]] | Partly right | Missed signal | Atlanta threw too little in heavy rain for London to reach 150, and the rain was forecast publicly almost five hours before kickoff. |
| [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/jacoby-brissett-passing-yards-over.md|Jacoby Brissett 300+ passing yards and 3+ touchdowns]] | Wrong | Missed signal | Arizona's passing volume came, but Brissett got half of it: the read had no arm for benching him mid-game despite a week-long public debate. |
| [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/kirk-cousins-passing-yards-over.md|Kirk Cousins 300+ passing yards]] | Wrong | Partly foreseeable | Kubiak's run lean at a one-score deficit was already in our Las Vegas read; his run calls two scores down were new. |
| [[user:text/nfl/nfl-betting/2026/week-8/week-8-review/selection-traces/lac-at-la-total-points-over.md|LAC @ LA over 51.5]] | Script not played | Mispriced | The read priced the over at 18% against the book's 33% and was right, but two parlays carried it anyway. |
