Week 8 moved several offenses off the identity their season reads carried, with Dallas, Tampa Bay, Detroit and Las Vegas all running far more than their early-season rates. It also showed that a pressure rate means little without the coverage behind it, and that a contested quarterback job needs an in-game hook arm. Each line below names what changed, the count behind it, and the read it changed, grouped by the week 9 game it bears on.

Each takeaway carries its evidence label. **Identity** means a standing trait, **opponent plan** means one game plan against one opponent, **game state** means a score-state cell, and **unclear** means the cause does not separate yet.

## JAX @ BAL

- **Identity:** Baltimore's Cover 2 lean fell for a third straight week — 2 of 35 against Buffalo, after 16% and 19% — and Cover 3 took 17 of 35, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/baltimore-ravens-defense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Baltimore's pass game under emergency quarterback Fagnano ran through the backfield, with Justice Hill on 6 targets and Flowers on 4 for 0 yards, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/baltimore-ravens-offense-reads.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Jacksonville played zone against the Colts and dropped single-high man — Cover 0 or 1 on 4 of 37 dropbacks, against 27.3% in 2026 — so its man rate depends on the opponent, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/jacksonville-jaguars-defense-reads.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Coen ran into the league's worst run defense from the first snap — 31 designed rushes to 22 dropbacks — so the score-state read gains a tied cell and a run-defense modifier, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/jacksonville-jaguars-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is Baltimore leaving Cover 2, or did it game-plan Cover 3 against Buffalo's heavy sets?** The lean is leaving, since Cover 2 ran 1 of 23 against Buffalo's 11 personnel, so this game carries weeks 6-8 (Cover 2 13.4%, Cover 3 38.1%, Cover 4 or 6 30.9%) over the 24.3% five-game lean, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/baltimore-ravens-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is Tuten's passing-down role splitting three ways?** No — his route share of 0.14 was game state in a blowout, not a smaller role, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/jacksonville-jaguars-offense-reads.md]]

## CIN @ ATL

- **Identity:** Cincinnati has gone shotgun 11 personnel and pass-first since week 7 — 11 personnel on 45 of 70 plays, and 1 of 53 dropbacks from under center, [[████████████████████████████████████-███████-███████-████████]]
- **Opponent plan:** Cincinnati's defense went man and blitz against Tennessee — Cover 0 or 1 on 20 of 46 dropbacks, against 0.19-0.25 in weeks 4-7, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/cincinnati-bengals-defense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** █████ moved toward the slot, with 18 of 52 aligned routes inside (0.34, against 0.26) and 16 targets, [[user:text/nfl/player/jamarr-chase.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Cincinnati's left side lost to Jacob Martin, who had 11 pressures and 3 sacks on 40 rushes, [[user:text/nfl/player/joe-burrow.md]]
- **Identity:** Atlanta's run defense has turned, allowing 5.3 or more a carry in 3 of its last 4 games after 1.9-3.0 in weeks 1-4, and Tampa Bay ran 55 times for 321 yards, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/atlanta-falcons-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is Cincinnati's week 7 offensive turn a standing plan?** Yes — Erick All's torn ACL moved the mix from 12 to 11 personnel, so this game carries about 2 fewer Brown carries and 3 more Burrow dropbacks, [[████████████████████████████████████-███████-███████-████████]]
- **Deeper dive — does Rees chase a two-score deficit before the fourth quarter?** No — dry, down 8-16 in the second and third quarters, Penix dropped back 22 of 35, then 19 of 20 in the fourth, so the indoor profile carries 0.63 before the fourth and 0.90 in it, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/atlanta-falcons-offense-reads.md]]

## DEN @ CAR

- **Identity:** Joseph plays zone behind the blitz — 9 of 15 week 8 blitzes were zone, and 55 of 104 in weeks 1-7 — so "man mostly behind the blitz" overstated it, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/denver-broncos-defense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Coleman owns Denver's backfield while Harvey is out, goal line included, with all 5 goal-to-go back carries and 16 routes to Dobbins's 2, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/denver-broncos-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Carolina's line loses to four rushers — 15 pressures on 33 dropbacks with four or fewer rushers, and 6 sacks, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/carolina-panthers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Waller is a slot receiver now, with 29 routes, 15 of them from the slot, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/carolina-panthers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Carolina's depleted secondary sat in single-high zone, with Cover 3 on 22 of 41, but Carolina fired coordinator Evero on 10-30, so this game reads its defense from personnel only until the new caller's first game, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/carolina-panthers-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — was Waddle limited by the chest injury, or has Franklin taken part of his role?** The injury — his 0.53 route share keys to Friday practice status, full at 0.77 and 0.51 for Waddle and Franklin, limited at 0.53 and 0.71, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/denver-broncos-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — does Young's knee brace explain his sack rate?** Still open — his sacks per pressure rose from about 0.11 to 0.25-0.33, and the dive waits on the week 8 out-of-pocket charting, [[█████████████-████████████-█████-█████-████-█████-████-███████]]

## DAL @ IND

- **Identity:** Dallas turned heavy and run-first for a second week — 11 personnel on 27 of 72 snaps and a 0.51 dropback rate, against 0.63-0.80 in weeks 1-6, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/dallas-cowboys-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Lamb's depth collapsed to a 4.7-yard average on 11 targets, his season low, and Arizona's two-high shell does not explain it, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/dallas-cowboys-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Spann-Ford is the route tight end while Ferguson is out, with 25 routes after Ferguson's first-quarter ankle exit, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/dallas-cowboys-offense-reads.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Dallas played man behind a four-man rush, with Cover 1 on 20 of 51 charted passes, against 0.11-0.27 in weeks 1-7, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/dallas-cowboys-defense-reads.md]]
- **Game state:** Steichen did not chase down five scores — 9 of 16 fourth-quarter dropbacks down 35 with no hurry-up — so the trailing 9+ cell splits at 17, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/indianapolis-colts-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Warren came back at his full role, with 28 routes and 10 targets (0.36 a route), [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/indianapolis-colts-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Downs's targets per route never rose without Warren — 0.21, 0.18 and 0.15 across weeks 1-5, 6-7 and 8, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/indianapolis-colts-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Taylor's role held through the trade talk, with 24 routes and 38 of 60 snaps, [[user:text/nfl/player/jonathan-taylor.md]]
- **Deeper dive — are Dallas's weeks 7-8 a new run-first identity?** Yes — it held against two opposite shells and at every margin, so the profile takes weeks 7-8 dropback rates by state, gives Lamb about 0.8 of dropbacks as routes, and keys Pickens's share to his shoulder, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/dallas-cowboys-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is the Colts' 0.50 pressure rate on Lawrence a new front?** No — 11 pressures on 22 dropbacks is one game against a front ranked 32nd at 23.7%, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/indianapolis-colts-defense-reads.md]]

## NYJ @ KC

- **Identity:** Cyrus Allen is the Chiefs' third receiver, not Royals, with routes rising 4, 10 and 18 from week 6, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/kansas-city-chiefs-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Reid passes on one-score leads — 31 dropbacks to 12 designed runs leading by 1-8, with pass rate over expected positive in all 6 weeks with a sample, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/kansas-city-chiefs-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Mitchell is a full-time Jets receiver at a 0.74 route share, and Cooper plays the slot, 15 of 26 routes, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-york-jets-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — was the Jets' man coverage a Bowers plan?** Yes — the 0.63 man rate was a Las Vegas plan on top of a week 4 base shift to 0.34, so this game carries a 0.34 base arm with a low-weight 0.6 arm, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-york-jets-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is Emmett Johnson Mahomes's pressure outlet?** No — he is the third-down back since week 7, with 14 of 18 back third-down routes, so this game carries a 0.75 role-holds arm and a 0.25 revert arm, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/kansas-city-chiefs-offense-reads.md]]

## DET @ MIA

- **Unclear:** Petzing ran through a one-score deficit, running on 13 of 21 second-half plays trailing by 1-8, against the read's 0.82 dropback rate there, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/detroit-lions-offense-reads.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Petzing answered Minnesota's 0.79 blitz with 3 tight ends on 16 of 66 plays and play action on 7 of 9 second-half dropbacks, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/detroit-lions-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Vaki is a rotation back, with 11 of 37 designed rushes, and Gibbs's 0.62 share was his season low, [[user:text/nfl/player/jahmyr-gibbs.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Miami's four-man rush got home on Maye, 14 pressures on 27 dropbacks with 2 blitzes, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/miami-dolphins-defense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Hafley played Cover 3 against New England, 12 of 27 dropbacks, not the quarters the profile priced, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/miami-dolphins-defense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Gordon's route share is a checkdown role — 22 routes, 14 of them flats, for 1 target, [[███████████████████████████████-████████-███████-████████]]
- **Deeper dive — is Petzing's run-first deficit an answer to the blitz?** No — it is a shift that began in week 7 against Green Bay's 0.32 blitz, so this game reads about 0.50 trailing dropbacks and game pass rate over expected near -7, with no 3 tight end branch, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/detroit-lions-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — did the groin or New England's rush take away Willis's scrambles?** Not the rush — every trait of that plan drew his usual 11.6% scramble rate in weeks 1-7, so his rushing arms key to the groin on the 11-04 to 11-06 injury report, [[███████████████████████████████-████████-███████-████████]]

## CLE @ NO

- **Game state:** Monken threw into the two-score deficit, with 43 of 53 dropbacks down 9 or more, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/cleveland-browns-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Cleveland's protection got worse, with 22 pressures and 8 sacks on 50 dropbacks, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/cleveland-browns-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Cleveland's run defense leaked explosives, with 6 of 33 designed rushes going 10 or more yards, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/cleveland-browns-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — does Boston's two-high split survive a quarters corner?** Unproven — he went 5 for 37 on 8 two-high targets, six of them against Dean in Cover 4, so if New Orleans plays quarters the profile does not carry his season two-high rate, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/cleveland-browns-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is Fannin taking Concepcion's slot targets?** Unclear — Concepcion kept a full slot role but fell to 1 target on 19 clean routes, so this game carries Concepcion at 0.24 with a 0.11 low arm and Fannin at 0.18 with a 0.27 high arm, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/cleveland-browns-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — does New Orleans's coverage explain Concepcion's drop?** No — its current unit plays more man (22%) at the same two-high rate, so his 0.24 arm stands, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-orleans-saints-defense-reads.md]]

## NYG @ PHI

- **Unclear:** McKee loses to four rushers, not the blitz, pressured on 15 of 32 unblitzed dropbacks with 4 of his 5 sacks, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/philadelphia-eagles-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Mannion did not chase a one-score deficit with McKee, at pass rate over expected -9.7 down 3 to 6 in the fourth, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/philadelphia-eagles-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Lemon and Cooper ran routes on 0.95 of dropbacks while Smith is out, and Lemon drew 9 targets, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/philadelphia-eagles-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Fangio's single-high man rate is climbing and losing — 0.31, 0.36, then 0.45 since week 6, at +0.44 to +0.72 EPA allowed each week, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/philadelphia-eagles-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is Fangio's man a plan or a secondary short of bodies?** A plan — the rise is base-down man riding a blitz that went from 0.18 to 0.43 when the edge room broke, with the same five starting defensive backs, so this game carries base-down man at 0.21-0.24 with edge-healthy and Mitchell-out branches, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/philadelphia-eagles-defense-reads.md]]

## LA @ WAS

- **Identity:** LA's 13 personnel became a run tell with Adams out, with 14 dropbacks on 59 plays in weeks 7-8, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/los-angeles-rams-offense-reads.md]]
- **Game state:** LA's run volume is lead-only — 3 of 17 dropbacks up 9 or more — and the backs split by quarter, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/los-angeles-rams-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** LA's passing went short from week 5, with Stafford's depth of target falling from 9.1-11.0 to 4.2-6.4, [[user:text/nfl/player/matthew-stafford.md]]
- **Identity:** Blough's second-half one-score lead stays pass-leaning, at 10 dropbacks in 17 plays, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/washington-commanders-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Washington's receivers ran as a four-man set without McLaurin, with Williams drawing 7 targets at a 0.85 route rate, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/washington-commanders-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Quinn blitzed less and got more pressure — 11 blitzes on 43 dropbacks, and pressure at 0.53 — in the first game without Payne, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/washington-commanders-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is Stafford hurt, or is the short game McVay's design?** It leans to Stafford — McVay still calls a deep route on about 0.8 of dropbacks, but Stafford throws to one 0.17 of the time against 0.28 before, consistent with the right elbow but unproven, so the week 5 depth step is LA's base, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/los-angeles-rams-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — what is Washington's true pressure rate without Payne?** Unsettled — 0.14 in week 6 and 0.47 in week 8, and Stafford's quick game blunts it, so this game carries a wide pressure band, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/washington-commanders-defense-reads.md]]

## HOU @ LAC

- **Identity:** Herbert's depth collapsed under McDaniel and Alt's return did not restore it, at 4.9 yards against 8.6-10.8 in weeks 1-3, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/los-angeles-chargers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** LAC's backfield is a three-way committee, and Hampton leads it only early, with 8 of his 9 carries before the half, [[user:text/nfl/player/omarion-hampton.md]]

## LV @ SF

- **Identity:** Kubiak's trailing personnel is two tight ends, not three receivers, with three receivers on 11 of 93 dropbacks trailing by 8 or more in weeks 4-8, [[user:text/nfl/team/las-vegas-raiders-offense.md]]
- **Unclear:** Washington is Las Vegas's lead runner and Jeanty its passing-down back, after 25 carries to 2, [[user:text/nfl/player/ashton-jeanty.md]]
- **Unclear:** Tucker is the outside receiver in two-tight-end sets, at a 0.59 route share as Bech took 10 routes, [[user:text/nfl/player/tre-tucker.md]]
- **Identity:** Las Vegas's pressure drop has held two weeks, at 0.18 and 0.17 against 0.39-0.44 in weeks 4-6, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/las-vegas-raiders-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — is week 8's trailing run rate a new Kubiak level?** This game is the first test of it — Kubiak dropped back on 0.49 of trailing snaps against 0.65-0.76 in weeks 5-7, so Cousins's volume files by branch with a run-heavy trailing arm, [[user:text/nfl/player/ashton-jeanty.md]]

## GB @ NE

- **Unclear:** Watson's presence sets Golden's share — 1 of 13 targets before Watson's exit and 7 of 14 during the 23-snap absence, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/green-bay-packers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** LaFleur kept throwing on a two-score lead, passing on 17 of 30 second-half plays leading by 8 to 16, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/green-bay-packers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Green Bay's rush got home at its season rate against Carolina, 6 sacks on 47 dropbacks, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/green-bay-packers-defense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** New England's coverage went to quarters, Cover 4 or 6 on 17 of 37 dropbacks against a prior high of 10 of 31, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-england-patriots-defense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** New England's run defense held at the line, with Miami's 22 designed runs at -0.283 EPA a carry, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-england-patriots-defense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** McDaniels ran while trailing in the third quarter, 9 dropbacks on 21 plays down 3 to 10, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-england-patriots-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** The room after Henry's exit ran through Chism, 22 routes and 5 targets, and the tight ends, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-england-patriots-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — what target rate does Kyle Williams hold in the X role?** A low one — 25 routes for 1 target, and all five of his touchdowns went over 30 yards, so the profile carries his own X-role rate with a wide band and no yardage floor, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/new-england-patriots-offense-reads.md]]

## ARI @ SEA

- **Identity:** Arizona's blitz rate kept climbing, at 0.36, 0.40 and 0.45 of charted passes in weeks 6-8, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/arizona-cardinals-defense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Arizona's quarterback window reset — Minshew went +0.698 EPA on 21 dropbacks and Brissett -0.506 on 29, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/arizona-cardinals-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Arizona's backfield is Allgeier's while Love's ankle is out, after 11 carries for 147 yards, [[user:text/nfl/player/jeremiyah-love.md]]
- **Deeper dive — who starts at Seattle, and what does LaFleur call with Minshew?** Minshew starts, with Beck as backup, so the profile carries a Minshew start arm and a Minshew-to-Beck hook arm, and only Minshew's chase snaps carry evidence (12 of 15 dropbacks trailing 9 or more), [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/arizona-cardinals-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — does McBride's target rate move with Minshew?** No — his 0.29 targets a route matches his 0.27-0.28 with Brissett, so he carries his own rate, [[user:text/nfl/player/trey-mcbride.md]]

Seattle's side carries no week 8 takeaway here. The CHI @ SEA record is owned by another lane, and its takeaways are not yet in the Seattle or Chicago season reads.

## TB @ CHI

- **Unclear:** Robinson runs at every score with Mayfield back, with a first-half dropback rate of 0.08 within 7 points after 0.22 in week 7, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/tampa-bay-buccaneers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Tampa Bay's backfield is a two-back split, with Irving and Gainwell at 27 and 25 carries, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/tampa-bay-buccaneers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Heavy personnel is the tell, with 1 dropback on 42 snaps in 12 or 13 personnel, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/tampa-bay-buccaneers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — does Tampa Bay's run-first plan hold in dry weather at Chicago?** Partly — rain explains only week 8's depth, opponents do not explain the turn, and the thumb is unresolved, so the pass-volume arms are in the offense read, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/tampa-bay-buccaneers-offense-reads.md]]

Chicago's side carries no week 8 takeaway here, for the same reason as Seattle's.

## BUF @ MIN

- **Opponent plan:** Buffalo's defense went to man and blitz in Leonhard's first game calling from the booth, with single-high man on 15 of 30 and the blitz on 19 of 30, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/buffalo-bills-defense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Brady ran with a one-score first-half lead, 15 dropbacks on 33 plays, against the read's 0.60, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/buffalo-bills-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Shakir moved outside and Kincaid took the slot, with Shakir on 10 of 29 slot routes against 74 of 111 in weeks 1-5, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/buffalo-bills-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Flores's blitz lost its pressure once Detroit went heavy, at 2 of 9 dropbacks after the half against 9 of 20 before, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/minnesota-vikings-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — did Leonhard's man and blitz come from the booth or Baltimore's backups?** It cannot be split, but the blitz came on all 6 dropbacks before Fagnano while the man rose mostly against him, so this game carries the weeks 4-6 base against Murray (about 23% man, 32% blitz) with an elevated-blitz branch and no elevated-man branch, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/buffalo-bills-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — does O'Connell's fourth-down aggression fall away late in his own territory?** Still open — he went for 4th-and-5 at the Detroit 25 trailing 7-12, then punted 4th-and-5 from his own 33 trailing 15-19 at Q4 3:01, and the profile reads it before pricing Minnesota's late-deficit branches, [[█████████████-███████████-████-█-████-███████-████████]]

## Byes

Tennessee and Pittsburgh have no week 9 game, so these takeaways wait for week 10.

- **Identity:** Tennessee's shell has left quarters since week 5, at 0.29-0.36 Cover 4 and 6 against 0.44-0.54 in weeks 1-4, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/tennessee-titans-defense-reads.md]]
- **Opponent plan:** Helm moved inline and drew 9 targets on 25 routes against Cincinnati's man, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/tennessee-titans-offense-reads.md]]
- **Game state:** McCarthy's two-score lead ran 6 of 13 dropbacks in the third quarter and salted the fourth at 3 of 11, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/pittsburgh-steelers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Identity:** Pittsburgh's red zone ran pass-first but scored on the ground, with all 5 dropbacks inside the 10 failing and all three touchdowns runs, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/pittsburgh-steelers-offense-reads.md]]
- **Unclear:** Graham blitzed out of quarters, with 9 of 18 Cover 4 snaps blitzed against a prior high of 5, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/pittsburgh-steelers-defense-reads.md]]
- **Deeper dive — has Bradley taken over Tennessee's defensive calls, or has Saleh moved off quarters?** Still open — every Tennessee defensive measurement keys on Saleh calling quarters, [[user:text/nfl/season/2026/tennessee-titans-defense-reads.md]]
